Bartonella: The Epidemic You’ve Never Heard Of, Part 2
This is the second installment of a three-part series on Bartonella, bacteria that are being linked to a wide variety of ailments – many of them chronic, and some of them life-threatening. In part one, we talked about what Bartonella is, and its growing recognition as a potentially wide-ranging and serious infectious disease. Part two will cover the wide array of transmission vectors and illnesses associated with the bacteria, and part three will review the current state of the research and recommendations for the future. https://news.ncsu.edu/2012/05/bartonella-2/
Bartonella, Uncovering the ‘Stealth Pathogen’
Dr. Ed Breitschwerdt is an expert on infectious diseases and a doctor of veterinary medicine. He also finds himself on the front lines of a quiet but growing epidemic. Bartonella is a bacteria most commonly associated with cat scratch disease, which until recently was thought to be a short-lived (or self-limiting, in medical lingo) infection. Bartonella isn’t new – doctors have known about cat scratch disease for almost a century – but it’s only in the past couple of decades that researchers like Dr. Breitschwerdt have started to discover exactly how pervasive Bartonella infecton is in animals and people.

Understanding BartonellaBabesia and Lyme — it’s worse than you think
Babesia, a tick-borne infection that causes malaria-like symptoms, has been making headlines over the past two years as the number of reported cases increases, and concerns grow over the seriousness of the disease and its ability to be transmitted through the blood supply.
by Daniel J. Cameron, MD, MPH
Although Lyme disease is the most talked about tick-transmitted disease, Babesia is more common than you might think. In the 2015 issue of Trends in Parasitology, Diuk-Wasser and colleagues report that up to 40% of patients with Lyme disease experienced concurrent Babesiosis. [1]
This means that out of the estimated 300,000 cases of Lyme disease reported annually in the U.S., 120,000 of those individuals may also have Babesia. This is particularly alarming given that the disease can go undetected in asymptomatic individuals and is transmissible through blood transfusions or congenitally. Additionally, Babesia requires different treatment than Lyme disease.

Do Bartonella Infections Cause Agitation, Panic Disorder, and Treatment-Resistant Depression?
Bartonella is an emerging infection found in cities, suburbs, and rural locations. Routine national labs offer testing for only 2 species, but at least 9 have been discovered as human infections within the last 15 years. Some authors discuss Bartonella cases having atypical presentations, with serious morbidity considered uncharacteristic of more routine Bartonella infections. Some atypical findings include distortion of vision, abdominal pain, severe liver and spleen tissue abnormalities, thrombocytopenic purpura, bone infection, arthritis, abscesses, heart tissue and heart valve problems. While some articles discuss Bartonella as a cause of neurologic illnesses, psychiatric illnesses have received limited attention. Case reports usually do not focus on psychiatric symptoms and typically only as incidental comorbid findings. In this article, we discuss patients exhibiting new-onset agitation, panic attacks, and treatment-resistant depression, all of which may be attributed to Bartonella.

Nerve Damage
Nerve damage or neuropathy is the destruction or degeneration of the myelin sheath which insulates the axon of a nerve cell. When the myelin sheath is destroyed, the axon loses its ability to effectively conduct electrical impulses resulting in numbness, tingling, pain, weakness and burning sensations.

Neurotoxic Disorders: Reactivity to Lyme, Coinfections, Molds, and Petrochemicals
We originally thought of Lyme disease as primarily an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. In the decades that followed, researchers began identifyingother tick-borne bacteria and toxins that frequently accompany Lyme infections. We have come to realize that the symptoms which we once described as "Lyme disease" frequently involve other bacteria, such as Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, or Mycoplasma, or rarer species such as the Rickettsia group or tularemia. Transmitted in the digestive tract of ticks or fleas, these pathogens may be carried by cats, rats, mice, deer, and other animals, depending on the microbe. These pathogenic bacteria are among the smallest known life-forms on earth. Unlike most bacteria, they are harbored within the cell as a virus would be or within the interstices between the cells, making it difficult for the immune system to dislodge them.

The Surprising Link Between Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease
If you’ve been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, you know better than anyone the pain, frustration and anxiety associated with this difficult to define disease. Ask anyone what the worst part about fibromyalgia (FMS) is and they might list the numbness, pain, difficulty sleeping, irritable bowel syndrome and the persistent depression – or they might say the worst part is simply not knowing the cause. Some experts believe FMS is related to “illness,” trauma or just plain stress. Others link the condition to hormonal disturbances and chemical imbalances affecting the nervous system. Still other researchers blame genetic ties or claim there is no explanation at all. But what if there was an option D, “all of the above?” Clinical experience and in-depth testing have begun to point to Lyme disease complex, coinfections and weakened immunity, which could answer that question.

Lyme isn’t the only tick-borne illness Researchers find new bacterium
Patients who test negative for Lyme disease after a suspected tick bite could be suffering from a recently identified illness also spread by deer ticks, a team led by Massachusetts researchers reported Monday.
The paper describes two patients, one in Massachusetts and one in New Jersey, who were initially suspected of having another tick-borne disease but were instead found to have the new infection.
Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the findings underscore the increasing importance for doctors to think about more than Lyme, the region’s most common tick-borne disease, when they see a patient who was or could have been bitten by a tick. The authors said the cases also may give a hint about why some patients who test negative for Lyme become sick with similar symptoms.

Proof That Chronic Lyme Disease Exists
The evidence continues to mount that Chronic Lyme Disease (CLD) exists and must be addressed by the medical community if solutions are to be found. Four National Institutes of Health (NIH) trials validated the existence and severity of CLD. Despite the evidence, there are physicians who continue to deny the existence and severity of CLD, which can hinder efforts to find a solution. Recognizing CLD could facilitate efforts to avoid diagnostic delays of two years and durations of illness of 4.7 to 9 years described in the NIH trials. The risk to society of emerging antibiotic-resistant organisms should be weighed against the societal risks associated with failing to treat an emerging population saddled with CLD. The mixed long-term outcome in children could also be examined. Once we accept the evidence that CLD exists, the medical community should be able to find solutions. Medical professionals should be encouraged to examine whether: (1) innovative treatments for early LD might prevent CLD, (2) early diagnosis of CLD might result in better treatment outcomes, and (3) more effective treatment regimens can be developed for CLD patients who have had prolonged illness and an associated poor quality of life.

Lyme borreliosis as a cause of myocarditis and heart muscle disease
Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a multisystem disorder that may cause self-limiting or chronic diseases of the skin, the nervous system, the joints, heart and other organs. The aetiological agent is the recently discovered Borrelia burgdorferi. In 1980, cardiac man manifestations of LB were first described, including acute conduction disorders, atrioventricular block, transient left ventricular dysfunction and even cardiomegaly. Paihohistological examination showed spirochaetes in cases of acute perimyocarditis. Recently, we were able to cultivate Borellia burgdorferi from the myocardium of a patient with long-standing dilated cardiomyopathy. In this study, we have examined 54 consecutive patients suffering from chronic heart failure for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. On ELISA, 32·7% were clearly seropositive. The endomyocardial biopsy of another patient also revealed spirochaetes in the myocardium by a modified Steiner's silver stain technique. These findings give further evidence that LB is associated with chronic heart muscle disease.

False negative test results can occur in many different medical tests, from tests for pregnancy , tuberculosis or Lyme disease to tests for the presence of drugs or alcohol in the body.

Could Lyme Disease be the newest STD? Scientists say so.
The latest sexually transmitted disease (STD) may start with a tick bite – at least, in certain cases. A team of medical researchers may have linked Lyme Disease, generally tagged a tick-borne infection, to unprotected intimate physical relations between humans. Lyme Disease may join the ranks of such STDs as chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis.

LymeDisease.org Publishes Largest Study of Chronic Lyme Disease Ever Conducted; Patients Suffer Poor Quality of Life and High Ra
Chronic Lyme disease is associated with a poorer quality of life than most other chronic illnesses, according to a newly published comprehensive patient survey. Compared to the general population, patients with chronic Lyme disease have high disability and unemployment rates, are five times more likely to visit healthcare providers and twice as likely to be hospitalized, the survey found.

A longitudinal study of Babesia microti infection in seropositive blood donors
Babesia infection is caused by intraerythrocytic tick-borne parasites. Cases of transfusion-transmitted babesiosis have been increasingly recognized. To date, no Babesia test has been licensed for screening US blood donors. We conducted a longitudinal study to assess the course and markers of Babesia infection among seropositive donors identified in a seroprevalence study.
Lyme Disease -- History and Current Controversies- University of California Video
(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne infection in the United States. Over the last 15 years Lyme disease has become one of the most controversial and politicized diseases in medicine with vastly different views about how to make the diagnosis and how to effectively treat patients. Richard A. Jacobs, Emeritus Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases at UCSF, reviews the historical aspects of the disease and explores the often contentious controversies surrounding diagnosis and therapy.

Medication Induced Mitochondria Damage
Damage to mitochondria is understood to play a role in the development of a wide range of seemingly unrelated disorders such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and others. Mitochondrial damage is also a hallmark of ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia.

Is Mold Making You Sick?
Suffering from brain fog, chronic fatigue or insomnia? How about depression, migraines or inflammation? If so, you may have a problem with an internal mold infection.
Associated with an astounding number of health issues, mold toxicity is a common — although often hidden — source of declining health. Thriving in humid climates, or wherever water damage is present, the fungus releases spores into the environment, which infiltrate the air, along with carpet and furniture, clothing, mattresses and bedding. People living or working within these spaces inhale the spores, which then reproduce in the body and (for the more harmful varieties) subsequently release mycotoxins. Mold and mycotoxins can be ingested through contaminated food as well. You can learn more about this hazard here.

Mycotoxins: The Hidden Hormone Danger In Our Food Supply
Grains, once considered the foundation of the USDA’s food pyramid, have recently come under scrutiny due to their purported evolutionary incompatibility (e.g. Paleodiet), their co-option by biotech and agricultural corporations (e.g. Monsanto’s Franken-Corn), as well as the fact that they convert to “sugar” within the body, to name but a few of a growing list of concerns. But there may be a more underlying problem affecting all grains, including both organic and conventional varieties, that Nature herself produces, and it goes by the name of Mycotoxins.

Mold and Mycotoxins: Often Overlooked Factors in Chronic Lyme Disease
In the recently released book Why Can't I Get Better? Solving the Mystery of Lyme and Chronic Disease, by Richard I. Horowitz, MD, a compelling argument is made that there is much more to chronic Lyme disease than Lyme alone. In fact, Horowitz unveils his "16-Point Differential Diagnostic Map," which suggests numerous "nails" in the foot that must be explored in order to regain wellness. He further expands the concept of "chronic Lyme disease" by suggesting MSIDS, or multiple systemic infectious disease syndrome, as a more encompassing term for the multiple underlying factors involved in chronic illness.

Lou Gehrig had a house in Lyme
Lou Gehrig, the world’s first ALS patient (ALS is often called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” in the US) owned a holiday home in Lyme, Connecticut where he spent a lot of time gardening over the years. This means that the world’s first diagnosed ALS patient spent a lot of time outdoors in the biggest Lyme hotspot on Earth at the time – the town with the world’s first diagnosed Lyme cases.

Common Misdiagnoses of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a condition marked by widespread chronic pain and fatigue with no known cause. It's not fatal. Though the pain may not have been caused by an injury, it is real. For example, a person could have Lyme disease, arthritis, or obstructive sleep apnea -- all conditions that can mimic fibromyalgia -- and also have fibromyalgia as a secondary condition.

The Surprising Link Between Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease -
Some experts believe FMS is related to "illness," trauma or just plain stress. Others link the condition to hormonal disturbances and chemical imbalances affecting the nervous system. Still other researchers blame genetic ties or claim there is no explanation at all. But what if there was an option D, "all of the above?" Clinical experience and in-depth testing have begun to point to Lyme disease complex, coinfections and weakened immunity, which could answer that question. The Lyme-Autism Connection
To many parents, the discussion about whether Lyme disease and autism are connected is a moot point. It is really just semantics. The fact is that many children with autism have an active Lyme infection. Debate about whether Lyme causes autism, Lyme contributes to autism, or Lyme comes about after autism does nothing to help the many autistic kids who are testing positive for Lyme disease daily. If kids are infected, then they need to be treated. It's that simple.

Multiple Sclerosis is Lyme Disease: Anatomy of a Cover-Up
Perhaphttp://owndoc.com/lyme/multiple-sclerosis-is-lyme-disease-anatomy-of-a-cover-up/s the biggest ongoing medical scandal of the past hundred years is the fact that it has been known since 1911 that Multiple Sclerosis is caused by a bacterium, and that the Big-Pharma-controlled medical-industrial complex covered this up in order to make money selling symptom relievers to MS patients. At the lower levels there is no cover-up at all, but simply human nature at work, as we wrote about here, to dispel the notion that we are “conspiracy theorists”. Since 1911, overwhelmingly much medical research has been conducted where living Borrelia bacteria were found in the brains of people who were diagnosed with MS.

Mycoplasma the Linking Pathogen in Neurosystemic Diseases
(ONTARIO) - Several strains of mycoplasma have been "engineered" to become more dangerous. They are now being blamed for AIDS, cancer, CFS, MS, CJD and other neurosystemic diseases.
There are 200 species of Mycoplasma. Most are innocuous and do no harm; only four or five are pathogenic. Mycoplasma fermentans (incognitus strain) probably comes from the nucleus of the Brucella bacterium. This disease agent is not a bacterium and not a virus; it is a mutated form of the Brucella bacterium, combined with a visna virus, from which the mycoplasma is extracted.
